Research Interests:

Measurement of instructional practices; methods for investigating and evaluating teacher effectiveness; program evaluation; generalizability theory and multilevel modeling

Bio:

Dr. José Felipe Martínez is an Assistant Professor of Social Research Methodology since 2007. Before coming to UCLA he was an Associate Social and Behavioral Scientist at the RAND Corporation. His research interests involve the application of quantitative methods and measurement theory to issues in educational assessment and education policy, school effectiveness, and program evaluation. His recent work involves developing and validating measures of opportunity to learn and instructional practice for use in reading, mathematics, and science classrooms, and investigating the relationship between these measures and student achievement. This work is currently being extended to investigate teachers' assessment practices on one hand and opportunities to Learn for English Language Learners on the other. He teaches courses on measurement, research design, linear models, and survey methods. Dr. Martínez holds a bachelors’ degree in Information Systems from the University of Aguascalientes, México, and a Ph.D. in Education from UCLA with a specialization in advanced quantitative methods. His past work has also included technical studies of school effectiveness indicators, and evaluations of large federal education programs in the US and Mexico.
