Professor Carolyn Rose on May 25, 2010
Prof Rose, from Carnegie Mellon University, School of Computer Science, comes to AQM on Tuesday, May 25 from 12-1:30pm in Moore Hall to discuss:
"Analysis of Transactivity in Group Discussions in On-Line and Face-to-Face Settings"
The talk describes a five-year effort to formalize and computationally model a construct that has been called transactivity in discourse, beginning with analysis of synchronous and asynchronous on-line discussions and then extended to the case of discussion in classrooms. I will also discuss the process of developing this formalization, both from a conceptual and technical perspective as well as exploring the many caveats and considerations from a methodological perspective.

New Two-Year Fellowship for UCLA PhD Students!
The Two-Year Fellowship is for advanced doctoral students focused on quantitative methods and interested in how such methods can be used in research addressing education issues in (but not limited to) mathematics teaching, learning and assessment.
AQM is looking for doctoral students in complementary Ph.D. programs from UCLA, such as the Departments of Biostatistics, Statistics, Social Welfare, Public Policy, Sociology, Education, Economics, and Psychology.
Must be a U.S. Citizen or permanent resident.
Susan A. Murphy, Ph.D.
"Developing Evidence-Based Adaptive Treatment Strategies" at UCLA Reagan Hospital, Friday, January 29, 2010 from 1-3pm (RRMC) B130.
Open to Faculty, Students and staff. AQM fellows are expected to attend.
Susan A. Murphy is H.E. Robbins Professor of Statistics, Research Professor at the Institute for Social Research, and Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Michigan Medical School. Dr. Murphy’s primary research concerns individually tailored treatments, sometimes called adaptive treatment strategies or dynamic treatment regimes. In particular she works on experimental designs and analysis methods with the goal of constructing adaptive treatment strategies in substance abuse and mental health. At this time she is involved in a variety of experimental studies designed to inform the development of adaptive treatment strategies; these involve studies in ADHD, autism, drug dependence by pregnant women and treatment for alcohol dependence.

Issues in Longitudinal Structural Modeling of Life-Span Data
Friday, October 16, 2009 10am-12pm
Louis Jolyon West Auditorium (C8-183) in the Neuropsychiatric Institute building at
760 Westwood Plaza, Los Angeles, CA 90024
Dr. McArdle is Senior Professor of Psychology at the University of Southern California where he heads the Quantitative Methods training program. He teaches classes in topics in psychometrics, multivariate analysis, longitudinal data analysis, exploratory data mining, and structural equation modeling. His research has been focused on age-sensitive methods for psychological and educational measurement and longitudinal data analysis including publications in factor analysis, growth curve analysis, and dynamic modeling of adult cognitive abilities. He was recently awarded an NIH-MERIT grant from the National Institute on Aging for his work on “Longitudinal and Adaptive Testing of Adult Cognition.” Working with the American Psychological Association he has led the Advanced Training Institute on Longitudinal Modeling (2000-2009) and Exploratory Data Mining (2009).
